Virginia Class submarines are returning to Virginia after a year-long absence, after completing their first sea trials in the US Navy’s new fleet of submarines.
The Virginia Class subs were decommissioned last year, having been decommissioning in the wake of the 2013 Fukushima nuclear disaster, and were later returned to service in 2014, following their successful completion of a yearlong maintenance and refit program.
While Virginia Class is expected to be a key component of the new fleet, it was not part of the original plan to decommission Virginia Class in 2019.
The submarine will continue to conduct maintenance and test operations until 2024, with the last of the remaining Virginia Class subclasses expected to join the fleet sometime in 2021, according to a statement from the Virginia Naval Submarine Base, located in Newport News, Virginia.
Virginia Class was originally decommission, but returned to active service in the Navy’s fleet after being decommissionned in 2017.
